Mijn hemeltje

I’m so transpiring

The tax mans taken all my dough,
And left me in my stately home,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon.
And I cant sail my yacht,
Hes taken everything Ive got,
All Ive gots this sunny afternoon.

Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze.
I got a big fat mama trying to break me.
And I love to live so pleasantly,
Live this life of luxury,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon.
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

Holy crap. How can anyone FUNCTION in this type of weather? I’m sweating all over the place and I feel like half my body just melted off. I can’t help but compare myself to a sausage on a huge friggin’ barbeque. =(

Yesterday, I went to see the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at Paradiso, Amsterdam. It was the first time I’d ever been at a concert, and I felt a bit out of place at first. I had no clue what to expect. The people seemed nice enough, a bit of a hipster crowd, as I expected. No goths, thank god (no offence). The venue wasn’t as big as I expected, it was very cozy. The Brothers Movement opened the show. They sounded a lot like BRMC and they were gone after half an hour or so. Didn’t get much of an impression. After that, the floor started filling up and it was starting to get crowded, but not uncomfortably crowded by any means. When Peter and Robert showed up on stage, it suddenly got very, very REAL. I was actually SEEING them, not indirectly on tv or computer, but they were just THERE, being as real as can be. And that’s when I really started to enjoy myself there. They played for two-and-half hours in total, and their level of commitment to the crowd was aweinspiring. I’ve heard that they played another eight songs after the show. Wish I could’ve been there, but it was getting very late for a schoolnight. They played a handful of acoustic songs during the show, and it was enough to make me happy. I’m more into their Howl/acoustic stuff than anything else. All in all, it was an amazing (first) concert experience and I’m thankful to my sister for pushing me to get those tickets. The only thing I regret is having to face the morning after, which I delayed as long as I could. My memories of the show resemble a dream more than anything. I know that I was there, but it feels so far away already. I’ve never been a huge BRMC fan, just a casual one. Last night definitly sparked something up for me and I love Rob and Pete a lot more than I had before. That’s all I have to say =).

Also, some people seem to think Black Rebel Motorcycle club is an embarassing name for a band. I couldn’t disagree more. I would never feel any shame in saying **I love BRMC <3<3**.

After dropping Library War from my watchlist, I set out to find a replacement. I hit up some anime blogs and discovered The Tower of DRUAGA – Aegis of URUK. Yes, it sounds very funky/suspicious. Apparently, it took its name from a really old arcade game from the eighties. But watching the show, you’d really think it was a RPG (or MMORPG) or something. Ten seconds into the first episode, I was ready to call it a day… It looked as stupidous as the title sounded. I’m lucky I didn’t. It was the funniest shit I’ve seen in a long while. The first episode was a hilarious spoof of Japanese RPGs with the stupidest shit happening one after another. It totally caught me by surprise and just when I thought I’d found my show, it turns out to be a one time thing. The second episode got all serious and generic and I was very disappointed. Still couldn’t figure out if the show was supposed to be serious or not, so I watched the third one just in case. It got worse from there. I’d still watch this if it continued to spoof, but it’s a lost cause by now. Too bad.

Library War is exactly what the title implies. It’s a show about people fighting for and against the censorship of books deemed harmful to society. Yes, a library war. The story is about this girl who joins the military task force to protect books, because well, she likes to read (?). So yeah. She has a superior officer who kind of has the hots for her, but shows it in all the wrong ways. One minute he’s trying to help her, the next he verbally abuses her to tears. She subsequently does something heroic to prove herself to him and afterwards he utters some words of acknowledgement that make her go all mushy on him. There’s also this guy who giggles a lot and I don’t feel like talking about the rest of the cast right now.

My first impression of this anime was very positive. You have this weird premise you don’t really understand and which is kind of silly (I mean getting killed over books, there are better ways to spend your time), but it’s ok, because the main character is this likeable and usually funny boyish girl trying to prove herself in a male-dominated environment while there’s some real chemistry going on between her and the officer dude. The art is great to look at and I’m actually very happy that the characters are kind of normal looking. The show is also pretty darn funny at times and very charming.

After about five episodes, my enthusiasm has unfortunately dropped a little. The girl is very likeable most of the time, but she’s starting to get a little annoying with her constant crying and need for approval. I got the impression in the beginning that she’s a real tough girl who earnt her spot at the force. But these last four episodes have followed exactly the same (boring) recipe. She GETS KNOCKED DOWN, BUT SHE GETS UP AGAIN. YOURE NEVER GONNA KEEP HER DOWN. I’m also not too happy with the story. All they do is shoot at eachother to protect books and mags. It would help me, the viewer, a lot if they just threw me a bone explaining WHY it is so important to protect this stuff. Like MAYBE it’s all part of the big idea of freedom of expression or something. Also, with all the shooting around, I’m lacking a sense of real danger and a serious undertone. If the show goes on like this, I don’t think I’ll be watching it any longer.

Anime watchlist

First thing I want to do is write about anime again, because with all the free time I’m having right now I’ve started trying some again. I haven’t watched a show in ages because frankly, my standards have reached a high point and I pretty much think 90% of anime is pure crap. Where have all the good shows gone? I can’t friggin stand the cliched, fanservy, harem, moronic actiony pedocrap that’s coming out most of the time. I just watched the first two episodes of kurenai and I friggin DETEST it because it’s so friggin pedo and it kicks realism out the door in like two seconds flat. Without further ado, here’s the list of anime I have previewed and decided to (maybe) watch:

Hajime no Ippo (old one, but it’s enjoyable so far), Library War (characters seem really interesting), Amatsuki (too gay), Nabari no Ou (too gay), Macross frontier (incredibly gay), Special A (too stupid/anorexic), Soul Eater (I’ve heard it’s amazing) kurenai (PEDO) Detroit Metal City (looks like a friggin masterpiece), Kaiji (exciting stuff), Blade of the Immortal (hopefully the artwork doesn’t ruin everthing for me) and the Gurren Lagann movie (not just a recap please).

Pigmies

Jeebus Christ. I have no idea what to do with this blog. Should I just let it crash and burn like its predecessors, or should I *try* to make it work for the umpteenth time. I don’t even know what the blog should be about anymore. I watch a lot of movies, but LIKE HELL I’m gonna review each and every one of them. Also, this pumpkin seed I’m eating is more interesting than my life right now. I think I’ll try and type something once in a while again and hope that I find a purpose for this blog.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

I watched this movie not knowing what to expect. I’m glad to say that I was very pleasantly suprised. Hedwig is hilarious, beautiful, sad, and romantic at the same time. The songs are awesome and I’m listening to the soundtrack as I write. John Cameron Mitchell is a genius and I’ll look forward to whatever he comes up with in the future.

History of Violence, A (2005)

Viggo was amazing in Eastern Promises, so it shouldn’t surprise you that I wanted to see this movie as soon as possible. He’s definitely getting older though. I though he’d look kind of young in this one, but you can really see his age catching up with his appearance. That’s a big bummer. The movie was different than I’d expected, but a lot more interesting as well. The violence in the movie is chilling, very different from the glamorized Hollywood action you see in most action movies. The story seemed almost surreal at times, because you’re just not used to that kind of exposure. All in all, I really liked it (especially when the kid kicked the shit out of the other guys, not so much when he started using a gun on people).

Shortbus (2006)

Well yeah, I needed to know what the hype was about. Shame on me. I’m still a little bit in shock watching this movie. But I can tell you that it was kinda sweet, kinda funny, kinda interesting and a whole lot of weird and awkward.

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

Even though I have no friggin’ idea what this movie is/was about, it was funny to watch for a bit. Sam Rockwell is awesome though. Also, Alan Rickman as Marvin the Paranoid Android!

Iron Man (2008)

Iron man is friggin awesome! I never really watched the cartoon, I just remember some black-haired dude walking into some kind of weird suit and he was off fighting funky coloured evil duds who I think came from outer space or it could be my memory failing me. Anyhoo, I was never an Iron Man fan, untill NOW. Iron Man is kind of like Batman because both are rich guys fighting bad people in a fucked up world. The difference is that Tony Stark is like a million times richer than Bruce Wayne, and he’s a REAL player and he blows shit up instead of ninja-fighting. This movie scored a helluva lot of coolpoints for having Robert Downey Junior as Stark. I don’t know what would’ve happened if he wasn’t in this movie, but it would definitely go down on the FUNNYSCALE and the SUPERAWESOMESCALE. I’m telling you, Iron Man kicks major ass and its major selling point is being a lot different and a lot more BADASS than the other superdudes. (I still love you Batman)

Time (2007)

Another interesting/weird Korean movie by Kim Di-Duk, who I’m really digging as director. It’s about people losing their identity/going crazy after getting plastic surgery done for everlasting love. The movie is absolutely fucked up in a brilliant and entertaining way. I friggin’ loved it.

Isle, The (2000)

The third Kim Di-Duk film I watched. I can’t help it. I’ve wanted MOAR and MOAR ever since I saw Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring. This one was a lot more violent, explicit and confusing than the others. It was pretty much the same in the ‘crazy’ department though. It was a very shocking movie that was kind of interesting but not impressive enough for a re-watch.

Legend of Drunken Master, The (1994)

If there’s anything I’ve learnt watching his movies, it’s that Jackie Chan is freaking amazing. A freak of nature freaking amazing. The fightscenes are fabulous, superentertaining, original and… and… EXPLOSIVE! Jackie Chan is a friggin HULK in the end and it’s awesome.

Gohatto (1999)

I didn’t really watch the movie, I just kind of glanced through it. I do think I have the right impression though. It’s a Japanese gay samurai murder story movie thing. It looks kind of cool, with the samurai and stuff. And Ryuhei Matsuda is kind of mysterious and girly and weird and stuff. Overall, the movie is kind of weird in a bad way, like confusing-weird and awkward-weird and doesn’t-add-up-weird. So yeah, it’s kind of stupid.
